Dr Ria Smit_Paarl TV: Preventative Health vs Aesthetic Medicine
My practice here at Mooikelder is focused on Preventative Health, Women's Health and Aesthetic Medicine.
BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
In short, preventative health is basically ALL those things that help us prevent disease. The focus here is on well-being and not just on physical health.
These include healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and stress management strategies. It is encouraging to see that there is definitely a tendency among people to make healthy adjustments in their lifestyle.
For me, the role of a doctor is to help identify disease by picking up early signs of it long before you experience symptoms of it.
There is a long list of conditions where it is possible to do this.
Blood pressure, diabetes, cervical cancer and breast cancer are just a few of these. In the case of diseases such as blood pressure and diabetes, it is also possible to prevent further effects of the disease even if it is diagnosed.
In Aesthetic Medicine, the focus is on preventing and treating the visible effects of ageing. But more on this in later episodes.
Women’s health as a field in medicine has grown a lot in the last 30 years and is not limited to gynaecology and Obstetrics anymore.
When compared to men:
We react differently to medications, We are more prone to certain illnesses, We view life differently, We experience life events differently. Sexuality for women is also different from men.
Women’s health, therefore, views a woman as a whole and in context and wonderful research is being done to continually find out more about what exactly is different between the sexes.
In my practice, therefore, these various fields of medicine go hand in hand and complement each other.
In subsequent episodes, I will focus on preventative health and share more about what to look out for in the specific age groups.
